Nahum Bible Study Guide – Free Verse by Verse
The book of Nahum is not often studied. Yet it shows us an important aspect of God’s character. Nahum is something of a sequel to the book of Jonah. In Jonah, God’s compassion and grace to the Ninevites shines through. It is a book about God’s forgiveness and second chances. Nahum also deals with Nineveh. But in this book, God’s righteous anger, justice, and judgment are highlighted.
How do we deal with the fact that God is wrathful and jealous?
Nahum 1:2 – The Lord is a jealous and avenging God; the Lord is avenging and wrathful; the Lord takes vengeance on his adversaries and keeps wrath for his enemies.
This verse is not oft quoted. We prefer to talk about God’s love, mercy, and grace. Yet His justice is equally true. In the book of Nahum, we dig into hard questions such as “Why is God angry?” “Is anger bad or good?” “How does God’s justice relate to our daily lives today?”
As always, we seek to not only study the Word, but consider how to obey it by applying it to our lives and living it out by the power of the Holy Spirit.
