Jonah 2:1-10

Jonah’s Prayer

Summary- Jonah cried out to the Lord from the belly of the great fish. He acknowledged his desperate condition and his needy state, and his desire to return again to the Lord. He knew that the Lord, alone, had saved him. The Lord proved His sovereignty in having the fish vomit Jonah up onto dry land.

Central Teaching- Nowhere is outside of the Lord’s presence, and He always hears the prayers of His children.

Key Words- prayed, cried out, depth, answered, salvation, fish, vomited

Key Verse- 2:2

Ten things this passage says-

  1. Jonah prayed to the Lord from the stomach of a fish.
  2. He was in distress.
  3. God heard His voice.
  4. God cast Jonah into the sea.
  5. Not only did God cast Him into the sea, but it was God’s breakers and billows that passed over him.
  6. Jonah thought he’d been expelled from God’s sight.
  7. Jonah purposed to look back towards God’s holy temple.
  8. Jonah was near death.
  9. Salvation is from the Lord.
  10. The Lord commanded the fish to vomit Jonah up onto the dry land.

Ten things this passage does NOT say-

  1. “The belly of the fish” was a figurative location. Jonah was just in a dark and lonely place.
  2. Jonah cried out to the Lord before he was in distress.
  3. God didn’t hear Jonah, and didn’t reply.
  4. The difficult situation that Jonah found himself in was from Satan.
  5. Once Jonah sinned against the Lord and fled from Him, there was no way back.
  6. Jonah was never in any real danger.
  7. Jonah was actually outside of the presence of the Lord.
  8. Jonah refused to turn back to the Lord.
  9. Jonah could save himself.
  10. The fish just randomly decided to vomit Jonah up.

What does this passage teach me about God?

He is omnipresent. We cannot escape from Him.

He hears the cries of His children.

He disciplines His children.

He not only sometimes throws us into difficult situations, but He creates those situations for our good.

He has brought up my life from the pit.

He is in charge of creation, and it obeys Him.

He is holy.

Salvation is from Him.

How does this passage apply to my life?

I am never so low, so desperate, so sinful that I cannot turn to Him in repentance, and He will hear me.

Salvation is from Him alone. I should not turn to others, or even myself for safety.

Even in my deepest affliction, I should give thanks to the Lord.
