Jude 1-8 Inductive Bible Study

Jude 1-8

Contend Earnestly for the Faith

Summary- Jude identifies himself as a bondservant of Christ and a brother of James. He writes to those who are called, sanctified, and preserved in Christ Jesus and wishes them mercy, peace, and love.

Jude wants to write about their common salvation, but felt he needed to write to urge them to fight for the faith. Unsaved, ungodly people who pretended to be saved for their own purposes had crept in and denied Christ and His grace.

History shows us how God deals with such people. In Egypt, he brought them out of slavery and then destroyed the unbelieving. Angels who turned against Him were bound in darkness until their eternal judgment. Sodom and Gomorrah practiced wickedness and immorality and were used as examples of undergoing the judgment of eternal fire. These apostates all followed their lustful imaginations, defiled the flesh, rejected authority, and mocked angels.

Central Teaching- Cling to the truth, because those who turn away from it will be judged for eternity.

Key Verse(s)- 3-4

Key Words- bondservant, brother, called, beloved, kept, mercy, peace, love, salvation, contend, faith, unnoticed, condemnation, grace, licentiousness, deny, Egypt, destroyed, angels, judgment, Sodom and Gomorrah, punishment, defile, reject, revile

Ten things this passage says-

  1. Jude is a bondservant of Jesus Christ and brother of James.
  2. He writes to those who are called, beloved, and kept.
  3. He prays that mercy, peace, and love would be multiplied to them.
  4. He wants to write to them about their common salvation.
  5. He feels it is necessary to appeal to them instead of fighting for the faith handed down to saints.
  6. Apostates who had been marked for condemnation had crept in unnoticed, turning God’s grace into immorality and denying the Lord Jesus Christ.
  7. The Lord saved people out of Egypt and then destroyed those who didn’t believe.
  8. Angels who didn’t keep to their proper sphere, He kept in chains in darkness until the day of their eternal judgment.
  9. Sodom and Gomorrah practiced wicked immorality, and God used them as an example of undergoing the punishment of eternal fire.
  10. These apostates defile the flesh, reject authority, and revile angelic majesties.

Ten things this passage does NOT say-

  1. Jude brings out the close physical connection he has to Christ as His half-brother.
  2. Jude was written to apostates to warn them of the judgment to come.
  3. God’s mercy, peace, and love are skimpy, and Christians don’t have enough.
  4. Jude doesn’t appreciate the gift of salvation that the Lord has given us but wants to be the voice of doom.
  5. The Christian life is easy, and we don’t need to struggle against error or darkness.
  6. Apostates are really Christians who aren’t walking with the Lord for a time.
  7. All of the people God saved out of Egypt were believers who practiced obedience to God in the wilderness.
  8. Angels who have rejected God have a second chance and can turn back to Him.
  9. God let Sodom and Gomorrah’s immorality go unchecked and unpunished.
  10. Apostates today are different than apostates in those days. They’re more knowledgeable and make wiser choices.

What does this passage teach me about God?

He is not a respecter of persons. His own half-brother was His bondservant.

He calls, sanctifies, and preserves us.

He grants us multiplied mercy, peace, and love.

He delivered faith to the saints once for all.

He has no mercy on those who do not believe, but judges and destroys them.

He has a place for every created thing.

What He destroys, He destroys absolutely.

He graciously uses some as an example to warn others.

How does this passage apply to my life?

Before I can truly follow Christ, grasp hold of the truth, and fight against error, I must be His bondservant. I must empty myself of my own desires, “rights,” and pride and submit myself fully to His will for my life.

Follow the leading of the Holy Spirit. If He urges in a different direction than I’m heading, follow His guidance.

Take doctrine seriously. Don’t think it doesn’t matter, or follow along with the crowd. Hold fast to the truth.

Live morally, and do not let the grace of God be an excuse for sin.

Jude 5-

Rom 15:15

15 But I have written very boldly to you on some points so as to remind you again, because of the grace that was given me from God,

2 Peter 1:12-13

12 Therefore, I will always be ready to remind you of these things, even though you already know them, and have been established in the truth which is present with you. 13 I consider it right, as long as I am in this earthly dwelling, to stir you up by way of reminder,

1 Cor 10:1-13

For I do not want you to be unaware, brethren, that our fathers were all under the cloud and all passed through the sea; 2 and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea; 3 and all ate the same spiritual food; 4 and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they were drinking from a spiritual rock which followed them; and the rock was Christ. 5 Nevertheless, with most of them God was not well pleased; for they were laid low in the wilderness.

6 Now these things happened as examples for us, so that we would not crave evil things as they also craved. 7 Do not be idolaters, as some of them were; as it is written, “THE PEOPLE SAT DOWN TO EAT AND DRINK, AND STOOD UP TO PLAY.” 8 Nor let us act immorally, as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell in one day. 9 Nor let us try the Lord, as some of them did, and were destroyed by the serpents. 10 Nor grumble, as some of them did, and were destroyed by the destroyer. 11 Now these things happened to them as an example, and they were written for our instruction, upon whom the ends of the ages have come. 12 Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed that he does not fall.

Num 14:22-37

22 “Surely all the men who have seen My glory and My signs which I performed in Egypt and in the wilderness, yet have put Me to the test these ten times and have not listened to My voice, 23 shall by no means see the land which I swore to their fathers, nor shall any of those who spurned Me see it. 24 “But My servant Caleb, because he has had a different spirit and has followed Me fully, I will bring into the land which he entered, and his descendants shall take possession of it. 25 ”Now the Amalekites and the Canaanites live in the valleys; turn tomorrow and set out to the wilderness by the way of the Red Sea.”

26 The LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying, 27 “How long shall I bear with this evil congregation who are grumbling against Me? I have heard the complaints of the sons of Israel, which they are making against Me. 28 “Say to them,’As I live,’ says the LORD, ‘just as you have spoken in My hearing, so I will surely do to you; 29 your corpses will fall in this wilderness, even all your numbered men, according to your complete number from twenty years old and upward, who have grumbled against Me. 30’Surely you shall not come into the land in which I swore to settle you, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun. 31′ Your children, however, whom you said would become a prey — I will bring them in, and they will know the land which you have rejected. 32′ But as for you, your corpses will fall in this wilderness. 33’Your sons shall be shepherds for forty years in the wilderness, and they will suffer for your unfaithfulness, until your corpses lie in the wilderness. 34’According to the number of days which you spied out the land, forty days, for every day you shall bear your guilt a year, even forty years, and you will know My opposition. 35’ I, the LORD, have spoken, surely this I will do to all this evil congregation who are gathered together against Me. In this wilderness they shall be destroyed, and there they will die.’”

36 As for the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land and who returned and made all the congregation grumble against him by bringing out a bad report concerning the land, 37 even those men who brought out the very bad report of the land died by a plague before the LORD.

Num 26:64-65

64 But among these there was not a man of those who were numbered by Moses and Aaron the priest, who numbered the sons of Israel in the wilderness of Sinai. 65 For the LORD had said of them, “They shall surely die in the wilderness.” And not a man was left of them, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun.

Ps 106:26

26 Therefore He swore to them

That He would cast them down in the wilderness,

Heb 3:16-19

16 For who provoked Him when they had heard? Indeed, did not all those who came out of Egypt led by Moses? 17 And with whom was He angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness? 18 And to whom did He swear that they would not enter His rest, but to those who were disobedient? 19 So we see that they were not able to enter because of unbelief.

Heb 4:1-2

Therefore, let us fear if, while a promise remains of entering His rest, any one of you may seem to have come short of it. 2 For indeed we have had good news preached to us, just as they also; but the word they heard did not profit them, because it was not united by faith in those who heard.

Jude 6-

John 8:44

44 ”You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
