The book of 2 Peter is Peter’s second letter to the churches. In the first letter he focuses on many basic matters of faith and also the fact that true believers will suffer for Christ. Since writing that letter, it is evident that many false teachers started to penetrate the church and spread destructive heresies. Peter’s goal in this epistle is to expose the false teachers, their motives, and their lifestyle and encourage believers everywhere to protect against them. Peter himself was an eyewitness to Jesus, His miracles, His resurrection, and His fulfillment of Old Testament prophesy. And he wanted to make certain that the rock solid truth was not distorted in any way. In chapter one Peter reminds believers of how they can be sure of their own calling and emphasizes the paramount importance of the Scriptures. Verse 21 is one of the most quoted verses in support of the doctrine of the inspiration of Scripture, “For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.” In the following chapters Peter focuses on the lifestyle and coming judgment of false teachers. Where God is working, Satan will also be actively trying to oppose Him. Flocks of sheep attract wolves. Churches attract false teachers. False teachers have never found it easier to spread their message, using many methods including television, the internet, and mass media. They do not stand up in church and say, “I am a false teacher with a message from Satan and I am going to preach to you today.” Instead they are subtle. Wearing a suit and a tie, a sleek hairdo, and energetic smooth preaching, they mislead people and lead them to the road of destruction. As believers we must prepare ourselves and protect ourselves with God’s Word. The word “knowledge” appears 16 times in this short book. Knowledge of the truth is the best protection that we have. Join us in this study of 2 Peter to build up your knowledge of the truth so that you can stand firm in an ever shifting culture.

Hosea’s ministry took place during the latter divided kingdom period before the Assyrian exile of the Northern Kingdom and the Babylonian exile of the Southern Kingdom. It was a time of rebellion and apostasy. God’s people did not follow Him as their God, but turned to idols. In return for God’s faithfulness, they constantly spurned him and their hearts turned after deaf and mute idols, who would not and could not keep them accountable for their sins. Into this society, God sent the prophet Hosea to warn of His coming judgment. But Hosea was not just a normal prophet with a normal message. His message would become larger than life as God used his very life as a visible object lesson. The book of Hosea is most famous for God’s command to Hosea to marry a lady who would later betray him with unfaithfulness and turning to another man. Hosea had to enter a covenant with her and commit himself to her, even knowing what she would become. The marriage picture of Hosea’s faithfulness and unconditional love, contrasted with Gomer’s treachery is a powerful depiction of God’s love and faithfulness to His people, and their faithlessness. The book does not only teach us important history about Israel, but shows us amazing lessons of love, forgiveness, and commitment, but also justice. Practical lessons which are relevant to our lives and relationships today abound. Spouses will learn about the meaning of real love. Those with broken relationships will learn about forgiveness. And all of us will come to a deeper understanding of our own sin and a deeper appreciation of God’s mercy and grace. Join with us in studying this amazing story and see how God will lead you to obey the lessons inside!

Malachi is the book-end of the Old Testament. After this book was written, the people of Israel would not hear divine revelation from God for four hundred years. The people of Israel at the time of Malachi claimed to honor God. They were very religious. More than willing to offer sacrifices or visit the temple or sing praises to God, most people would have concluded that their relationship with God had never been better. Malachi was not one of those people. Through Malachi God condemned His people for their hard hearts and selfish ways. But though the people lived in an age when there were no cell phones or airplanes, the spiritual struggles that they faced are very similar to ours. Some of the key themes in this book include divorce, giving, rituals verses true faith, and more. Nowadays many church goers are caught in the same trap as the Israelites at that time. While many are very religious outwardly, sometimes the heart is not fully committed to God. Through this book we will learn the importance of giving God the glory He deserves.

The book of Titus is one of the pastoral letters Paul wrote to individuals who were involved in church planting and leadership development. Paul gives Titus direction on appointing elders, confronting false teachers, feeding the flock, and motivating believers to godly living. Paul challenges Titus to hold on firmly to the Word of God and never compromise with false teachers. The words of wisdom he shared with the younger Titus are still true for us in the post-modern world we live in today. This letter shows us what a healthy church looks like. Paul does not only focus on the leaders, but also on all ages of men and women. No matter what stage of your Christian life you are in, this book has something for you.

Philemon is one of Paul's most personal letters. Philemon had a slave who ran away to Rome, Onesimus. While in Rome he came in to contact with Paul and became a believer. The letter was sent by Paul to encourage Philemon in accepting and forgiving Onesimus upon his return. In this letter, we can observe the way Paul interacts with his friend. He does not offer correction in a vacuum. Rather, he uplifts Philemon in the ay he communicates with him. Paul says that Philemon "refreshed" the heart of the saints who came to his house. We can learn from the Paul the art of uplifting and gracious, but meaningful, conversation. The powerful themes of love, acceptance, and forgiveness can be seen throughout the letter. Christianity changes cultures from the bottom up by transforming one person at a time from the inside out. Philemon shows how the truth of Scripture influences our daily interactions and relationship with others. The practical lessons in Philemon can inspire you to improve your own relationships with those close to you and to forgive others as Christ has forgiven you.
