Studying Deuteronomy will help build your foundation of faith, transform your understanding and appreciation of the Old Testament, give you answers to frequently used attacks against Scripture, and show that all of Scripture is relevant and life-changing. I do not believe anyone who finishes this study of Deuteronomy will find it boring! Many people shy away from the Old Testament, especially books like Deuteronomy. They may think that it is archaic or has little to do with our life today. However, the book of Deuteronomy is rich. You will find that every chapter has practical principles which are relevant to our lives today. It teaches God's people the importance and blessings of obedience. Deuteronomy is often quoted in the New Testament. It formed the foundation for the faith and practice of Jews during the time of Jesus. Important themes in this book include God’s justice, the Ten Commandments, family values, and the blessings of obedience compared to the consequences of disobedience. Deuteronomy 6 contains one of the most important Biblical passages on family. Perhaps most importantly, this book points us to Christ, who is the ultimate fulfillment of the law.

Daniel serves as an amazing example of how to live for God in the midst of a dark world and a pagan culture. If you think you find it hard to be a light for the Lord in your culture, Daniel likely found it harder. Far from home? Check. Exile? Check. Almost alone in a foreign land? Check. Trying to stand up to a powerful leader who has the power to kill you? Check. In spite of all of these challenges, Daniel managed to live a pristine life as a follower of God. The story of Daniel teaches us that we can serve God faithfully no matter what circumstances are around us. No one can control you or make you sin. No one can take away your faith no matter how hard they try. Daniel was surrounded by powerful kings and kingdoms. God gave him visions of many more mighty kingdoms to come. However, one theme clearly resonates through the book. Men and their kingdoms will rise and fall, but God's kingdom endures forever. The book of Daniel contains some of the most awesome and detailed prophecies recorded in Scripture. These prophecies describe apocalyptic events on a global scale. But as the life story of Daniel is woven through these awesome events, we are inspired to keep our feet on the ground, be faithful to build God's enduring kingdom, and live a transformed life as His servant. Don't miss this gripping study on the book of Daniel. We hope it will inspire you to shine the light of Christ by being a representative of His enduring kingdom.

On Paul’s second missionary journey, he visited Corinth and established the church there (Acts 18). Corinth was a prosperous trade hub on an isthmus of Greece which connects the Peloponnese peninsula with the mainland. It was also a decadent city. Corinth was home to the temple of Aphrodite, a Greek goddess of love. The city was extremely immoral to the point that being called a "Corinthian" took on the meaning of being an immoral person. Into this corrupt culture, Paul took the gospel. Many believed and a church started. Paul spent 18 months there before leaving. But the church struggled. Immorality and sin crept in. 1 Corinthians was written by Paul to rebuke the church. 2 Corinthians is a much friendlier and very personal letter. Paul defends his apostolic credentials and his personal love and care for the Corinthians as he continues to restore his relationship with them. He also details much of the suffering he faced for Christ and for them, motivating them to stand strong. Other important themes include giving, endurance in afflictions, rejecting false apostles, and holiness. This practical book study will give you a behind-the-scenes look at Paul and his motivations. We hope that the lessons learned can transform your life and your walk with the Lord.

Hosea’s ministry took place during the latter divided kingdom period before the Assyrian exile of the Northern Kingdom and the Babylonian exile of the Southern Kingdom. It was a time of rebellion and apostasy. God’s people did not follow Him as their God, but turned to idols. In return for God’s faithfulness, they constantly spurned him and their hearts turned after deaf and mute idols, who would not and could not keep them accountable for their sins. Into this society, God sent the prophet Hosea to warn of His coming judgment. But Hosea was not just a normal prophet with a normal message. His message would become larger than life as God used his very life as a visible object lesson. The book of Hosea is most famous for God’s command to Hosea to marry a lady who would later betray him with unfaithfulness and turning to another man. Hosea had to enter a covenant with her and commit himself to her, even knowing what she would become. The marriage picture of Hosea’s faithfulness and unconditional love, contrasted with Gomer’s treachery is a powerful depiction of God’s love and faithfulness to His people, and their faithlessness. The book does not only teach us important history about Israel, but shows us amazing lessons of love, forgiveness, and commitment, but also justice. Practical lessons which are relevant to our lives and relationships today abound. Spouses will learn about the meaning of real love. Those with broken relationships will learn about forgiveness. And all of us will come to a deeper understanding of our own sin and a deeper appreciation of God’s mercy and grace. Join with us in studying this amazing story and see how God will lead you to obey the lessons inside!

The book of Titus is one of the pastoral letters Paul wrote to individuals who were involved in church planting and leadership development. Paul gives Titus direction on appointing elders, confronting false teachers, feeding the flock, and motivating believers to godly living. Paul challenges Titus to hold on firmly to the Word of God and never compromise with false teachers. The words of wisdom he shared with the younger Titus are still true for us in the post-modern world we live in today. This letter shows us what a healthy church looks like. Paul does not only focus on the leaders, but also on all ages of men and women. No matter what stage of your Christian life you are in, this book has something for you.

Malachi is the book-end of the Old Testament. After this book was written, the people of Israel would not hear divine revelation from God for four hundred years. The people of Israel at the time of Malachi claimed to honor God. They were very religious. More than willing to offer sacrifices or visit the temple or sing praises to God, most people would have concluded that their relationship with God had never been better. Malachi was not one of those people. Through Malachi God condemned His people for their hard hearts and selfish ways. But though the people lived in an age when there were no cell phones or airplanes, the spiritual struggles that they faced are very similar to ours. Some of the key themes in this book include divorce, giving, rituals verses true faith, and more. Nowadays many church goers are caught in the same trap as the Israelites at that time. While many are very religious outwardly, sometimes the heart is not fully committed to God. Through this book we will learn the importance of giving God the glory He deserves.

The Jews in the first century debated the core truths of their faith. Out of many themes in the book of Galatians, the law and faith is one that comes up over and over again. Need a Jew follow the law? What is the importance of rituals to believers today? What role does works have in salvation? A key theme in Galatians is that people are saved by grace through faith and not from works. No matter how foreign the concept of legalism to the Mosaic law is to us today, the key universal principles here are very practical. We must rely 100% on Jesus for salvation. The book of 2 Peter is Peter’s second letter to the churches. In the first letter he focuses on many basic matters of faith and also the fact that true believers will suffer for Christ. Since writing that letter, it is evident that many false teachers started to penetrate the church and spread destructive heresies. Peter’s goal in this epistle is to expose the false teachers, their motives, and their lifestyle and encourage believers everywhere to protect against them. Peter himself was an eyewitness to Jesus, His miracles, His resurrection, and His fulfillment of Old Testament prophesy. And he wanted to make certain that the rock solid truth was not distorted in any way. In chapter one Peter reminds believers of how they can be sure of their own calling and emphasizes the paramount importance of the Scriptures. Verse 21 is one of the most quoted verses in support of the doctrine of the inspiration of Scripture, “For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.” In the following chapters Peter focuses on the lifestyle and coming judgment of false teachers. Where God is working, Satan will also be actively trying to oppose Him. Flocks of sheep attract wolves. Churches attract false teachers. False teachers have never found it easier to spread their message, using many methods including television, the internet, and mass media. They do not stand up in church and say, “I am a false teacher with a message from Satan and I am going to preach to you today.” Instead they are subtle. Wearing a suit and a tie, a sleek hairdo, and energetic smooth preaching, they mislead people and lead them to the road of destruction. As believers we must prepare ourselves and protect ourselves with God’s Word. The word “knowledge” appears 16 times in this short book. Knowledge of the truth is the best protection that we have. Join us in this study of 2 Peter to build up your knowledge of the truth so that you can stand firm in an ever shifting culture.

This four chapter book is a great choice for personal reflection or group study. You will be hard pressed to find a more practical book. Almost every verse of this Pauline epistle is packed with deep spiritual truth and encouragement for believers. Though it was written nearly two thousand years ago, you will find that the lessons inside are so timely and practical it was almost as if it was written just for us. Of the various themes in Philippians, perhaps the most prevalent is “joy.” Throughout the book the joy we should have in Christ is stressed. Do you find that your relationship with Christ is a source of joy? Does this joy radiate through you to all the people around you? Are you perhaps a bit discouraged and want to increase your joy? Study Philippians! The church at Philippi had many strengths. But Paul encouraged them to keep living for Christ, to forget the past, and to press on toward greater heights. We hope that you too will reach higher heights in your walk with Christ after you gain a deeper understanding of this wonderful epistle.

Of all the sixty-six books in the Bible, James is likely the most practical. It is an excellent choice to study in your own small group. James was the half-brother of Jesus and the leader of the Jerusalem church. Many important themes are found inside this letter. The relationship between faith and works, joy in the face of trials, having a godly business, wisdom from above versus wisdom in this world, hearing and obeying the word, and powerful prayers are just a few of the practical topics we find in this book. If you study it with an open heart and by the leading of the Spirit, your life is sure to be transformed. Our website is called Study and Obey because we believe that every believer is called to carefully study His Words. These convict us, encourage us, and change us. But then we must obey them. Empty knowledge will not help. It must be followed up by obedience. This is shown clearly in the book of James which says that we must be “doers” and not just “hearers.”

Philemon is one of Paul's most personal letters. Philemon had a slave who ran away to Rome, Onesimus. While in Rome he came in to contact with Paul and became a believer. The letter was sent by Paul to encourage Philemon in accepting and forgiving Onesimus upon his return. In this letter, we can observe the way Paul interacts with his friend. He does not offer correction in a vacuum. Rather, he uplifts Philemon in the ay he communicates with him. Paul says that Philemon "refreshed" the heart of the saints who came to his house. We can learn from the Paul the art of uplifting and gracious, but meaningful, conversation. The powerful themes of love, acceptance, and forgiveness can be seen throughout the letter. Christianity changes cultures from the bottom up by transforming one person at a time from the inside out. Philemon shows how the truth of Scripture influences our daily interactions and relationship with others. The practical lessons in Philemon can inspire you to improve your own relationships with those close to you and to forgive others as Christ has forgiven you.

Whether you are looking for a study guide to lead a small group Bible study or want to enrich your own understanding of Haggai, our Bible study guide of Haggai can help. The lessons inside are extremely practical and designed to encourage obedience and life transformation. The book of Haggai is short, containing only two chapters. However, it provides amazing behind the scenes insight into the events described in Ezra. The people had returned to the land of Israel after seventy years of captivity. When they returned they experienced a spiritual high, being enthusiastic to celebrate the prescribed biblical festivals and rebuild their city. Their first task was to rebuild the temple and they engaged on it energetically. But where God is working Satan is also often working. Enemies came to discourage the people from continuing the work. And they succumbed to the temptation. Work on the temple was stopped. But what were the people doing? How long did the work stop? What did they work on instead? What did God think of their decision to delay His house? You can find all of these answers and more in our study of Haggai. Haggai was a prophet from God sent specifically to rebuke the people and encourage them to return to the work God had prepared for them. Although these events happened over two thousand years ago, we can learn many practical lessons which still apply to our lives today. One of the key lessons you will discover as you study this book is to have the right priorities and put God first.
